Cyber Security Week: Your car may not be totally in your control

Did you know that hackers can start and
unlock your car without needing the key My research includes breaking a popular
vehicle immobilizer system allowing many vehicles to be started without needing
the key and also proposing new techniques for ensuring the security and
privacy of direct vehicle to vehicle communication in the future. Just as
today cars are tested to ensure that safety in crash scenarios and by having
a specification for each component in the car it’s important that vehicles are
also tested for their resistance to cyber attacks. The work that I’ve done on
immobilizers adds to a body of work that we do in this department where we look
at the parts that comprise a modern vehicle and we test and measure their
security by applying cryptanalysis and other techniques looking at the
protocols that they use to evaluate whether or not they actually provide the
security that you would expect often they don’t and in fact the security of
the modern vehicle has been compared to that of a computer in the early 90s so
there is often little to no protection now cars are becoming more connected to
the Internet and to each other and so it’s even more important that we ensure
that they are protected from attack researchers elsewhere have shown that
vehicles can be crashed have the brakes locked either on or disabled remotely
over the Internet as well as testing each part in the car for vulnerabilities
we also propose new schemes that will ensure the security and privacy of
vehicles tomorrow and in the future. This involves developing new protocols
allowing vehicles to talk to one another in a way that means that fake or
fictitious traffic information can’t be distributed in a way that could cause an
accident and so there’s a european standard for vehicle to vehicle
communication and the work that we’ve done here actually we’ve proposed an
improvement to this standard that’s being considered for the first
generation of connected and autonomous vehicles. Thanks for listening if you’ve
got any comments leave them below
