Red Cross – SFD Smoke Alarm Install Campaign

Hi I am Brian Schaeffer, the Spokane Fire
Chief And I am Ryan Rodin with the American Red Cross Every day 7 people die in home fires Most in homes lacking working smoke alarms Smoke smoke alarms that are
properly installed and maintained provide an early warning signal which
could allow everyone in the home to safely escape That’s why we have
partnered with Red Cross here in Spokane to make sure every home has a working
smoke alarm since the Red Cross started the home fire campaign in 2014 we’ve
saved more than 650 lives across the country we’re excited to continue
offering this program to make our local neighborhoods safer. So far in 2019 we’ve
installed over 500 smoke alarms in Spokane homes. Fire moves fast. Give your
family the best chance for survival by making sure you have working smoke
alarms in your home. Install smoke alarms in every room used for sleeping outside
each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home including the basement.
Large homes may need extra smoke alarms It’s best to use interconnected smoke
alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound Smoke rises to the highest
point smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling
or high on the wall. Keep the smoke alarms away from kitchens to reduce
false alarms they should be at least ten feet or three meters from the stove. Test
all smoke alarms at least once a month across the test button to make sure the
alarm is working also replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or no
longer respond when tested. People who are hard of hearing or deaf can use
special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers. Smoke alarms are
an important part of a home fire escape plan We want to thank the Red Cross
volunteers and staff who are leading this life-saving effort in our community Together we can sound the alarm and help save lives in Spokane
