Surveillance cameras at Monroeville Mall were proposed long before shooting

PITTSBURGH’S “ACTION NEWS 4” REPORTER TIFFANY FISHER CONTINUES TALKING ABOUT THE PLAN AND HOW EFFECTIVE IT IS ELSE WHERE. COURTNEY? THAT’S RIGHT, THE MALL WILL HAVE A NEW SECURITY SYSTEM IN PLACE BY THE END OF THE MONTH. OTHER MALLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE ALREADY IMPLEMENTING THIS. HOW DOES IT WORK? WE ALSO WILL TALK TO THE ALLEGHENY D.A. THAT SAYS A SECURITY CONSULTANT OFFERED IDEAS IN 2014 AND THOSE IDEAS WERE IGNORED. THE PLAN ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHTS AFTER 6:00, ANYONE UNDER 18 MUST BE WITH A PARENT OR GUARDIAN OVER 21 TO GET INTO MONROEVILLE MALL. I THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA. HOW THEY DO THAT, I’M NOT QUITE SURE. THAT’S THE PROBLEM, I THINK. A SPOKESPERSON WITH THE MALL REFUSED TO TALK WITH US ON CAMERA AND WOULD NOT SAY HOW HE SECURITY WOULD ENFORCE THE POLICY. THE MAYOR IS BEHIND THE PLAN AND SAYS THERE ARE AT LEAST 25 MALLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY THAT DO THIS. I THINK IT WILL HURT BUSINESSES IN THE MALL AND I THINK IT IS UNFORTUNATE FOR THE AREA. FOR EXAMPLE, A MALL IN CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY AS MONROEVILLE MALL STARTED TO USE THE PROGRAM UNDER 2001. IN 2009, THIS LAWSUIT WAS FILED AFTER TWO AFRICAN-AMERICAN TEENS WERE ASKED TO LEAST MALL BECAUSE THEY WEREN’T WITH AN ADULT. THE LAWSUIT CLAIMS QUOTE THIS POLICY SERVES NO PURPOSE. AND HAS QUOTE BECOME A TOOL TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST AFRICAN-AMERICANS. THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY D.A. SAYS THE YOUTH ESCORT POLICY MAY WORK BUT SAYS THE MALL SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO A SECURITY CONSULTANT IN 2014. IN THIS PROPOSAL THE CONSULTANT SUGGESTED THE MALL INSTALL SECURITY CAMERAS IN THESE FIVE LOCATIONS. ENTRANCES AND EXITS ON DAWN DRIVE, MALL PLAZA BOULEVARD AND JAMES NORTH STREET. THE PROJECT WAS EXPECTED TO COST JUST OVER $104,000. I DON’T BELIEVE THEY DID WHAT THE CONSULTANT ASKED THEM TO DO. NOW WE ARE RESPONDING TO VIOLENCE. WE SHOULD MENTION HERE, AT THE MALL, THERE IS AN INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE. THE MAYOR SAYS THAT INSIDE THE MALL AT THE SUBSTATION THAT’S BEEN CLOSED, THAT SUBSTATION WILL BE REOPENED IN THE COMING DAYS.

  1. please monitor my activity because someone other than me doesn't want to obey the laws of society. right? this does nothing for prevention of crime. it might move the crime to unmonitored locations, but then you… you'd have to end up monitoring everyones front door. i don't really care about the cameras. i assume i am on camera from the time i walk out my door til the time i walk back in. they are in our phones. more cameras are not going to keep anyone safer. i'd feel safer if my neighbors were not poor and not having to do that they had to do to survive.
