This is Arlo’s 4K security camera

This is the Arlo Ultra 4K, a smart-home security
camera that streams and records in 4K – that’s four times high-definition. Arlo previewed in last last year but at CES
in Las Vegas on Monday, I got to see the real thing. It’s a little bigger than Arlo’s current camera
although in part that’s because there’s more inside. It includes an integrated spotlight and a
couple of microphones that should help with noise cancellation. The 4K video is the big thing here. No other major smart home security camera
maker has a 4K camera yet. Nest has one with a 4K sensor, but it only
streams in high-definition. 4K video could help reveal detail previously
lost, like, say, a car license plate or a clearer look at someone on your property who
shouldn’t be. It also requires more bandwidth. Arlo says the 4K video is around 4Mbps upstream,
but it only flows when the camera detects something is happening. Like Arlo’s current camera, installation is
as easy as snapping it onto a magnetic mount. It’s also battery operated. The whole thing uses more power, but Arlo
says this new battery pack should keep the camera ticking along for just as long as the
current model – and that can be months. The camera comes with a new hub that supports
4K and will work with a home security system that Arlo plans to launch later this year. It’s backwards compatible with current cameras. A camera and hub will cost $399, two cameras
and a hub will be $599. Arlo is including a one-year subscription
to its cloud service, for video storage and smart motion alerts that are said to differentiate
between vehicles, people and animals. The Arlo Ultra 4K will be available in late
January. Keep watching TechHive for a review and sample
video as soon as we get one.

  1. Is 4 cams the max? If more are needed will an extender be needed and do they offer one? Is there a doorbell cam which works with it? Do they offer deadbolt locks?
