When & How to Setup the Diode for Ring Video Doorbell Installation | Ring Help


you may have noticed ring video doorbell included a diode in the packaging a diode is a small electrical component that looks like this to know whether or not you need to use the diode you need to know whether your existing doorbell chime is digital or mechanical the diode is only required if your existing chime is digital if you’re not sure what type of chime you have here’s an easy way to tell the difference when your doorbell rings is the sound it makes a classic dingdong sound if so then you probably have a mechanical doorbell to confirm this locate your doorbell chime and if you can remove the cover to see if it contains a physical chiming mechanism such as a small mallet hitting a metal plate if this is how your doorbell produces its sound then its mechanical in this case do not use the diode doing so may damage your doorbell chime if your doorbell plays a melody when it rings then that melody is most likely coming from a speaker inside your doorbell chime locate your chime to confirm that the sound plays through a speaker if so you have a digital door chime in this case you will need to attach the diode to wire your ring doorbell properly first connect your doorbell wires to your mounting bracket then take a look at your diode and notice this small marking on one end when you place the diode on your mounting bracket this marking should be on the same side as the wire that leads to your internal doorbell chime if you don’t know which wire that is don’t worry about it just connect the diode since connecting it the wrong way won’t do any harm your doorbell just won’t ring correctly if this happens just reverse the direction of the diode at the end of this process then try again position the black plastic part of your diode in the middle of the bracket and wrap the wire at each end around one of the screws place your ring doorbell on the bracket after restoring power at the breaker the front ring should light up indicating it’s receiving power push the front button on your ring doorbell to make sure it rings your home’s internal time if your internal chime doesn’t ring or if it doesn’t ring correctly simply remove your doorbell and reverse the direction of the diode and try again if you need additional help feel free to reach out to our support team or visit ring.com slash help with ring you’re always home
